I MET SCOTT PAGE WHEN I FIRST MOVED TO LOS ANGELES. MY FRIEND DON WILSON and I WOULD GO TO THE CHINA CLUB IN HOLLYWOOD EVERY TUESDAY WHEN SCOTT WOULD PLAY sax ALONG WITH OTHERS INCLUDING JEFF “SKUNK” Baxter. It was one of the greatest jam sessions along with some rehearsed songs. You never knew who was going to join in. I had just moved from new york and would go to the china club in upper manhattan. It was a great connection east and west coast to one of my favorite places for live music. after the show we would head downstairs to the club room and continue the drinks and conversations. scott always has an amazing presence. i do think he’s mellowed out a bit personally. On stage he’s amazing and carries a great energy. I “EXPERIENCED” pink floyd at the rose bowl in pasadena in 1994. We were high on hash brownies. The stereo sound was amazing. they opened up with the sound of circling helicopters, just insane! OK, comfortably numb is one of my favorite songs. I am a huge david gilmore fan. Money was just incredible with the stereo sound AS WELL. the amplified the cash register hit a harmonious level with roger water’s signature bass sound!
I bugged scott to sit him down and talk about his emmersive vision into the web 3, blockchain, crypto and nft world. while most people truly don’t understand the technological world we are emerging into, scott is right at the forefront of it! His understanding of AI is also a keynote in our conversation. “You better get on it or it’s going to leave you behind!”
the good news is i have been using ai, alpha and beta testing for the past 2 year on visual compositions.” yes I have hit the ceiling with it many times. My motto is “AI doesn’t know what AI doesn’t know unless it has a reference to go by.” That will change eventually. ai has three stages: 1. understanding a task and staying within those boundaries. 2. machine learning based off of input and accumulative feedback to create with prompts 3. artificial consciousness where it learns by sight, sound and input and starts to make decisions on its own. that’s the part that scares people. better to be in the know than to be in the dark. Me personally, I think there should be standardized kill codes to stop an out of control AI in it’s tracks. more about that in the future. the positives are a sychronized society much like manority report. The downside is the terminator.

SCOTT IS FOCUSED ON NFTS AND COMMERCE. THE GOLDEN MULLET, YES, HIS SIGNATURE MULLET HAS TAKEN ON A NEW LIFE AS THE SUBJECT MATTER OF HIS NEW MULTI-DIMENSIONAL, ACCUMULATIVE PUZZLE PIECE NFT. IT’S ABSOLUTELY INSANE HOW MANY IMAGES MAKE UP THIS NFT. EACH IMAGE IS UNIQUE AND THEY ARE MADE UP OF THE PHOTOGRAPHYS AND ARTWORK THAT ARE NOW ON THE MOON VIA THE INTUITIVE MACHINES’S ODYSSEUS MOON LANDER. SURE IT TIPPED OVER ON LANDING, BUT INSIDE THERE IS A BILLION YEAR HARD DRIVE WITH ALL OF THESE IMAGES ON THEM. FOR ME THAT IS SUPER COOL! SCOTT CALLED ME UP WHEN HE WAS PUTTING THIS ALL TOGETHER AND INCLUDED MY RARE JOHNNY CASH PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION ON THE HARD DRIVE. THEY WILL HAVE AN IMMORTALITY THAT WILL BE REDISCOVERD BY SOME ALIEN ONE DAY. I’LL BE LONG DEAD.
SCOTT TRAVELS A LOT AND I MEAN A LOT. RIGHT AFTER OUR INTERVIEW HE WAS OFF TO VENICE ITALY, THEN MONTE CARLO (ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES ON EARTH) FOR THE FORMULA 1 RACE IN MONACO. NEXT HE WAS OFF TO THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL. HE PERFORMS AS WELL AS BEING INVOLVED WITH SYMPOSIUMS TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF NFTS, BLOCKCHAIN AND CRYPTO. THEN HE WAS BACK IN TOWN FOR TWO DAYS, OFF TO LAS VEGAS THEN ON TO CABO SAN LUCUS.
IT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT LIFE, BUT HE ALWAYS LOVES COMING BACK TO HIS HOME IN THE WEST. SCOTT IS A NATIVE ANGELENO. THE AMOUNT OF TALENT HERE AND THE LIFESTYLE KEEPS LIFE FRESH. IT’S A CREATIVE FREEDOM THAT COLLECTIVELY BINDS US ALL TOGETHER. YOU CAN FLY ALL OVER THE WORLD FROM LAX JUST LIKE YOU CAN FROM JFK IN NEW YORK. WE LIVE THE WESTERN LIFESTYLE AND ENJOY THE AMAZING WEATHER, FOOD, BEACHES, TOWNS ETC. THE LIST GOES ON. SCOTT IS A TRUE EXAMPLE OF A PERSON THAT LIVES THAT LIFESTYLE TO A T.
I MET LELAND WHEN I RECORDED MY FIRST ALBUM BLACKBIRD IN 2014. HE HAS AN INCREDIBLE PRESENCE BEYOND HIS INCREDIBLE MUSICIANSHIP. HE BROUGHT TWO BASSES, ONE OF WHICH WAS HIS CUSTOM WARWICK. LELAND ALWAYS PLAYS THE ONE THAT SERVES THE SONG BEST WHEN HE’S IN THE STUDIO. HE IS A FULL RHYTHM SECTION UPON HIMSELF. IF YOU WERE TO MINUS THE DRUMS, YOU WOULD STILL HAVE SOMETHING DISTINCT & AMAZING.
WHAT HIT ME MOST IS HOW ARTICULATE AND SINCERE LELAND IS AS A PERSON. HIS EXPERIENCES, MOST PEOPLE WON’T UNDERSTAND, FOR THEY ARE MANY AND HISTORICAL, YET HE ALWAYS LOOKS AT THOSE MOMENTS HIMSELF AS WOW, I WAS THERE! HIS EGO IS IN HIS PLAYING AND THERE IS NO MISTAKING HIS LEVEL OF ABILITIES. JACKSON BROWNE’S DOCTOR MY EYES IS ETCHED UPON MY MIND AND EARS. THE BASS IS ICONIC AND SIGNATURE OF LELAND’S STYLE. ONE TAKE, EVEN WITH JACKSON LAUGHING DURING THE TRACK. YES I AM A HUGE JACKSON FAN MYSELF, ESPECIALLY HIS MASTERPIECE ALBUM LATE FOR THE SKY.
HIS STORIES OF JAMES TAYLOR ARE EVENTFUL IN THE WAY LELAND DESCRIBES JAMES’S PLAYING AS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY COMPLEX STYLES WHERE HE PLAYS BASS NOTES IN HIS PROGRESSION. LELAND HAS TO WORK AROUND THOSE BASS NOTES TO PLAY BASS! IT’S A STYLE LELAND LOVES. LELAND ALSO CALL THE SOUTH PHILLY STYLE AS THE ONE THAT ALWAYS INSPIRES HIM.
BLACKBIRD WAS RELEASED ON MAY 1ST 2015 AND HIT #21 ON ITUNES NEW ROCK RELEASES. AS AN INDIE ARTIST, I WAS ONE SPOT AWAY FROM BEING PROMOTED VIA ITUNES. I GAINED 13,000 FANS ON THE RELEASE WITH NO TOUR SUPPORT AND OVER 2.5 MILLION + PLAYS. IT WAS BITTERSWEET WHEN I WROTE MY NEXT ALBUM CALIFORNIA. I WAS TOLD THAT LELAND WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND HE WAS. I HAD REACHED OUT TO HIM AFTER THE FACT. A DISAPPOINT FOR US BOTH BECAUSE I TRULY ENJOYED HAVING HIM IN THE STUDIO. WHO WOULDN’T! THERE WILL BE A NEXT TIME!
